Web Hosting Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the most commonly asked questions (and the answers) about web sites hosted on SpeedGate's servers:

How can I find out how many people are viewing my site?

See our Online Web Traffic Statistics page.

How do I make changes to my site?

There are many programs you can use to edit web pages. If you eat, breathe and sleep HTML, or just need to make a quick fix, you can use any text editor down to Notepad or SimpleText. If you want more power, you can go with a code-based HTML editor like Allaire HomeSite. If you don't want to be bothered with any of this HTML stuff, you can use a WYSIWYG editor such as FrontPage or DreamWeaver.

You can upload your changes using any FTP program. Some examples include WS_FTP, CuteFTP, Fetch, and gFTP. You can even use Firefox with the FireFTP extension

Note: Some of these editors include publishing utilities which may or may not work with our servers (some are FTP-based, and should work on all our servers, while others require special extensions on the server).

  • Connect to your site's domain name to make changes.

If you were not provided with an FTP login and password, or if you have lost them, simply call SpeedGate at (949) 341-0800 and we will provide you the information. Note: requests for passwords should be made in writing, either by e-mail or faxed to (949) 341-0900. If you have a consultant working on your site, and your consultant needs information you do not have, contact us first. We will not give out your password without your prior authorization.

Can I use (ASP, PHP, Cold Fusion, FrontPage, CGI, Perl, etc.)?

We have a number of scripting environments and CGI languages available. We currently support ASP.Net 2.0, PHP 5.2, ColdFusion MX, and the FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions. We also support CGI programming using Perl and Tcl. Python (for CGI) is available on request, as are Java Servlets.

All our servers, including Linux/Apache and Windows/IIS, have PHP 5.2 and CGI/Perl available. At present, we only support ASP and ColdFusion on Windows/IIS. Please contact us to determine which languages are available on your site's current server. If you need a language that is not on that server, we can move your site to a server that does support it.

How do I set up an email form on my site?

We have a generic form mailer script on each of our servers, which will send either the contents of one field or a list of all fields and their values. Online directions are not yet available; until then, contact us for more information.

If you want finer control over the output of your form, you can write your own CGI script or template using one of the available scripting languages on your server. Email support in Perl is available using the Mail::Sendmail module.

How do I password-protect an area of my site?

For standard authentication (that dialog box that pops up asking for a username and password), you can contact us to request that an area be protected.

If you are familiar with scripting languages such as PHP, ASP, or Cold Fusion, you can use them to write your own authentication scheme, either using HTML forms or standard HTTP authentication. You can also write password-protected CGI programs in Perl. See the documentation and/or online users' groups for each language for an idea how to do this.
