FTP Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of the
most commonly asked questions (and the answers) about SpeedGate and using FTP for file transfers:
- What is FTP? What's it used for?
-
FTP, the File Transfer Protocol, is used for uploading and downloading files. Its most common uses are in downloading files from public FTP servers (software, for instance) and updating web sites. All our web servers provide FTP access to allow you to upload new and changed files to your website and delete outdated files.

- What FTP program should I use?
-
There are a number of FTP programs out there, for different computer systems. Most web browsers can access FTP, but to really use it we recommend that you install a dedicated FTP program. We've listed some of the more popular ones (both popular in general and popular among our staff) here:
- Fetch (Mac)
- WS_FTP Pro (Win)
- IglooFTP Pro (Win/Linux)
- gFTP (Linux/Unix, included in most Linux distributions)
- CuteFTP (Win)
- CoffeeCup Direct FTP (Win)
If none of these is quite what you want, you can look for other FTP software on sites like Download.com, Tucows, or (if you're into open source software) Freshmeat.net.
