Quick Start with Eudora
As of Feb. 28, 2001 Email settings have
changed for dial-up users. To work with our new nationwide
dial-up numbers, you will need to change your mail configuration
slightly.
- If you
have a dial-up connection, and have updated to one of our new access
numbers, you will need to use
dialup-pop.speed.net for the incoming mail server
and dialup-smtp.speed.net for the outgoing mail
server. (Directions for updating Eudora 4-5)
- If you
have DSL or another dedicated connection, you should still have
your mail client configured to use mail.speed.net
for both the SMTP server (sending) and POP server
(receiving).
For older versions of Eudora and Eudora
Lite: The POP Account field in the Eudora settings looks like
an e-mail address, but it isn't. Rather than yourname@speed.net, it
should be either yourname@mail.speed.net or
yourname@dialup-pop.speed.net. Your actual email
address will not change. (Directions for updating Eudora 3 or Eudora Lite 3)
Simple instructions for setting up Eudora
- To install Eudora on Windows or Macintosh, download the appropriate
file from the Eudora Website (www.eudora.com)
- Run (double-click) the file and follow through the install process.
- You should now have a Eudora icon in your Start or Apple menu.
Start Eudora. Depending on whether you are running the Windows or Macintosh version, you may see a message asking whether you want Eudora to be your default email program. Unless you are only installing Eudora on the side, you will want to say "yes."

- Eudora will now let you know about its three modes. It will install with all the advanced features enabled and an advertisement in the corner of the window. After you have finished setting up Eudora, you can remove the advertisement either by switching to a simpler mode or by purchasing a registration key from Qualcomm. For now, you just want to click on OK.

- Next you will see the intro screen to the Email Account Setup wizard. Click on Next to begin.

- Select Create a brand new email account and click Next.

- Enter your name and click Next.

- Enter your email address (for example, bob@speed.net or bob@mydomain.com) and click Next.

- Enter your login/username. Usually (almost always if you have an @speed.net address) this is the same as the first part of your email address, such as bob. Under certain circumstances, such as if the first part of your email address is longer than 8 letters or is a commonly-requested name (such as info), you may have been provided with a slightly different user name, such as charlott instead of charlotte, or info123 instead of info. Please check your account information to see if you have been provided with a different user name, enter it, then click Next.

- If you are a SpeedGate dial-up customer, enter dialup-pop.speed.net for the POP server. If you have a DSL or other dedicated connection, or if you connect through another ISP, ender mail.speed.net. Click Next.

- If you are a SpeedGate dial-up customer, enter dialup-smtp.speed.net for the SMTP server. If you have a DSL or other dedicated connection through SpeedGate, enter mail.speed.net. If you connect through another ISP, enter the SMTP server they provide. Click Next.

- You are now configured! Click Finish to begin using Eudora.

To check your mail, go to the File menu and select Check Mail.
To fine-tune your settings, go to the Tools menu and select Options.
To get rid of the advertisement window, go to the Help menu and choose Payment & Registration. You can either choose the Paid Mode and purchase a registration key from Qualcomm, or you can choose Light Mode and disable some of the advanced features.
