Configuring Your Computer for Business SDSL

SpeedGate Business DSL uses a DSL router with a built-in Ethernet hub. This router needs to be connected to your office network and can simply be connected to your network hub or switch. (You will need to use the uplink port on your hub or use a cross-connect ethernet cable to do this.)

If You Have NAT (Network Address Translation)

With NAT, only the router's IP address is visible to the Internet. Your own network will be configured on a private IP subnet (such as 192.168.254.x). By default your router will be configured for this network, with its own private IP address being 192.168.254.254, although this can be changed to a different network (such as a 10.x.x.x network) upon request.

Each computer on your network needs to be configured with an IP address from the private IP network (in the default configuration, you will have 192.168.254.1 through 192.168.254.253). It will also need to be configured to use the router's private IP address as its gateway, and to use SpeedGate's DNS servers (204.212.42.4 and 204.212.42.2). We have step-by-step directions for changing your TCP/IP settings depending on your operating system:

If You Have Routable IP Addressing

If you have purchased a block of IP addresses, you will need to configure each computer on your network to use one of the available addresses. Remember, the first and last IP addresses are reserved, and the second (always an odd number) is assigned to your router, so in a block of 8 you really have 5 available, in a block of 16 you really have 13, etc. You will also need to configure each system to use the router's IP address as its gateway, and to use SpeedGate's DNS servers (204.212.42.4 and 204.212.42.2).
