Connecting to SpeedGate with Windows 98 or Windows Me

Note: If you have Windows 95 and Internet Explorer 4 or 5 is on your system, you may be able to use these directions to set up your SpeedGate Internet connection.

  1. You should have been provided with an access number for your area. If you do not have one, and are reading this online, you can look up an access number here on our website.
  2. Find and click on the Internet Connection Wizard Icon on your desktop. You can also find it on the Start Menu under Programs, then Accessories, then Communications.

If you cannot find the Internet Connection Wizard, you can still set up your connection directly through Dialup Networking (directions for Windows 98, directions for Windows Me)

  3. Select "I want to set up my Internet connection manually..." and click Next. If you select one of the other options, it will try to set you up with MSN.

  4. Select "I connect through a phone line and modem." and click Next.

  5. Enter the area code, phone number, and country of the access number for your area (see Step 1). If the number is in a different area code than you are, make sure that "Dial using the area code and country code" is checked. You will not need to configure the advanced settings. Click Next.

  6. Enter your username followed by @speed.net, then enter your password. If you leave the password blank, it will ask every time you connect. Click on Next.

Note: If you have a SpeedGate (yourname@speed.net) email address, it will be the same as your email address. If you have a shell account (yourname@sa.speed.net) or a mail exchange (yourname@yourdomain.com), you should still enter yourname@speed.net here.

  7. Give your connection a name, such as "SpeedGate" or "Internet," then click on Next.

  8. If you want to connect to the Internet right now, check the box next to "To connect to the Internet immediately..." Click on Finish, and you're ready!

  9. You will automatically connect to the Internet when you start most Internet software. If you want to connect manually, you can create a shortcut on your desktop to the connection.
    • On Windows 95 or Windows 98, double-click on My Computer, then double-click on Dialup Networking.

    • On Windows Me, go to the Start Menu, then look under Settings for Dialup Networking.

Once you have the Dialup Networking Window open, click on the icon for your SpeedGate connection and drag it onto a blank area on your desktop.
