Connecting with Windows 95

Note: If your modem is already installed, and you have Internet Explorer 4 or 5, you may be able to use the Internet Connection Wizard directions to set up your connection.

To configure Windows 95 for connecting to SpeedGate, first close any applications that might be using your modem. Next, click on "Start" in the lower left hand corner of your screen to pull up the start menu. Select "Run...".

In the space, enter the file name "INETWIZ.EXE" and select "OK".

The following window should appear. Click on "Next".

If you see a screen asking if you will be connecting to the internet with a phone or a local area network, select phone line and move on. If you have already installed your modem (and it works in other applications), skip to "How to Connect". If you have not installed your modem, the following window will appear. Click on "Next".

Turn your modem off and then on. This is not necessary if you are using an internal modem. Click on "Next".

When Windows 95 has successfully detected your modem, the following window will appear. If the modem type appears incorrect, click on "Change" to select a different modem. Otherwise, click on "Next".

When this window appears, enter the appropriate information. The result should look similar to the example. Then click on "Next".

When this window appears, click on "Finish" to move on to the next phase of the setup.

In the "How to Connect" window, select "I already have an account with a different service provider", and then select "Next".

If you want to be able to use any mail tool for e-mail, in the "Internet Mail" window, select "No" and click on "Next". You may select "Yes", if you wish to use Microsoft Exchange for e-mail.

Windows 95 will now install any necessary software packages. You may be prompted for the Windows 95 installation diskettes or the Windows 95 CD-ROM. If you see the following window (or one similar to it), insert the CD-ROM (or installation diskettes) and click on "OK".

In the "Service Provider Information" window, enter "SpeedGate" in the box labeled "Name of Service Provider". Click on "Next".

In the "Phone Number" window, enter the area code and phone number of the access line nearest to you (you can look it up here on our website). This window should look like the example below. When done click on "Next".

The following window is where you must enter your user name and password information. After entering this information, click on "Next".

WARNING! (2/28/01) The settings have changed! You must add "@speed.net" to your username! In the example below, you would enter "bob@speed.net" instead of just "bob"

In the "IP Address" window, select "My Internet Service Provider automatically assigns me one.". Then click on "Next".

In the "DNS Server Address" window, enter the information exactly as it is shown below. The DNS server should be "204.212.42.4", and the alternate DNS server should be "204.212.42.2". After you have entered this information, click on "Next".

CCongratulations! You have finished this phase of the installation. Click on "Finish".

When prompted to restart your computer, click on "Yes". Windows 95 will now restart.

When your desktop comes back up, double click on the "My Computer" icon in the top left hand corner of your screen to open the "My Computer" window. Within this window, double click on the folder labeled "Dial-Up Networking" to open it. With your left mouse button, click and hold down on the "SpeedGate" icon to drag it onto the desktop. You are creating a shortcut that will look like the one in the following example. (You may get a prompt while performing this procedure -- see the next step.)

When performing the previous task, you may get prompted like this. Simply click on "Yes" and continue.

Close the two windows you opened while creating the shortcut, and double click on the icon that is now on your desktop labeled "Shortcut to SpeedGate". This will bring up the following information. You may need to re-enter your password. You can click on the "Save password" checkbox if you would like to avoid having to re-type your password every time you connect. If you are unable to select this option, instructions on configuring your computer to use this feature are detailed further down the page. If everything looks like the example below (except the user name and password, of course), then click on "Connect". Your modem should begin to dial.

If all is working properly, you should see the following three screens appear in succession. When the third screen appears, you will know that you have connected properly. Congratulations! Do not be alarmed if the connect speed is less than 28800 bps. This is a limitation of your phone line. It is normal for this connect speed to vary by the minute!

If you were unable to select the "Save password" option earlier, then double click on the "My Computer" icon in the top left hand corner of your screen to open the "My Computer" window. Within this window, double click on the folder labeled "Control Panel" to open it. Double click on the "Passwords" icon as shown. This should bring up the "Password Properties" window.

Within the "Password Properties" window, select the "User Profiles" tab. Select the second option as shown in the following example.

You may be prompted to restart your computer. Click on "Yes" and let Windows 95 restart. When Windows 95 comes back up, you will be prompted for a user name and password. You may use any user name and password you wish. This is NOT your SpeedGate user name and password! This is a Windows 95 password. It will let Windows 95 remember information about you that may be confidential (like your SpeedGate password).

When your desktop comes back up, double-click the "Shortcut to SpeedGate" icon again to bring up the "Connect To" window. You will now be able to check the "Save password" checkbox. Do this and re-enter your password again. You will no longer have to enter your password before dialing. Select "Connect" and allow Windows 95 to complete a successful connection to SpeedGate.

Congratulations! You are all done. Have fun surfing!
