Web & Email
It's always best to have the latest version of a web browser so that you can see the most content on the Web. Most browsers these days are full-service Internet suites that handle web surfing, email access, and newsgroup access. Here are the most popular Internet suites:
If you're a long-time fan of Netscape, or your computer isn't Windows or Mac-based, you may want to look into upgrading to Mozilla Firefox & Thunderbird. The Mozilla project grew out of Netscape back in the late 1990s, and Firefox has become the main "alternative" browser. We also highly recommend Opera, another all-in-one suite. Just the Web
If you already have a mail program, or if you have an older system with limited resources, you may want to look at a pure web browser.
* These browsers are based on Mozilla's core. Where's Netscape? As of February 2008, AOL has discontinued the browser. They recommend using Firefox instead. If you want the full Internet Suite experience, but have an older system that might not be able to run current versions of Netscape or Internet Explorer, take a look at Opera. It runs well even on older, slower systems with low memory, and it's a much smaller download than a typical Netscape or Internet Explorer installation. Mozilla Firefox is known to work well on older hardware as well, although on the Macintosh platform it requires OS X. If you're using Mac OS 7-9, you can also look at iCab. It's the only modern web browser still being developed for Mac Classic! (It has a Mac OS X version too, of course.)
