SpeedDSL F.A.Q.

Q: What is DSL?
A: DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) will carry data at significantly higher speeds over standard copper telephone wires with speeds up to 50 times faster than 28.8 modems and up to 10 times faster than ISDN.

Q: What is needed to check the availability of DSL in your area?
A: The area code and prefix of the phone number in your location and also the address of the location. We will be able to check the available within minutes of your request.

Q: Why is DSL available in some areas and not in others?
A: DSL is available in areas where our circuit provider has DSL equipment installed in the telephone company's Central Office (CO) that serves your location. Since DSL is a new offering, not all CO's are DSL ready at this time.

Q: Why are higher speed circuits not available in all locations?
A: It depends on the distance between the CO and your location. The farther the distance, the less likely a faster speed is available. This is due to weaker signals caused by line interferences as distance increases.

Q: Can the computer and phone share the same line?
A: No, you would need to get a separate line for your DSL connection.

Q: What if we would like to upgrade to a faster speed in the future?
A: As long as your location offers the higher speeds, upgrading is not a problem. The same router can be used if you are upgrading from a 192kbps to a faster speed of 384kbps, 768kbps, or 1.1mbps. However, routers for a 144kbps or a 1.5mbps/384kbps cannot be used with the speeds mentioned above.

Q: Can we use existing ISDN equipment for DSL service?
A: If you have an existing ISDN modem, it can be used for a 144kbps DSL connection (IDSL). However, you will not be able to use the same line for DSL service. If you would like to upgrade your speed, you will need to purchase a different modem.

Q: What is included in the installation?
A: The installation includes the setup on our computer systems and a technician coming out to your location and providing up to two hours of labor for inside wiring. Any time exceeding the allotted two hours will be billed at an additional charge. Most basic installations can be completed within the two-hour period.

Q: How long does it take to install the DSL service?
A: From the time the order is taken, it takes anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks to have an active DSL circuit.

Q: What kind of router/modem should we use?
A: It depends on the type and speed of your circuit. We provide the router that is necessary for your particular circuit, including any necessary configuration on the router.
